Navajo Indian

Why were the Navajo Indians able to retain so much of there land?
My daughter needs to know for her homework. She has been trying to find it for a long time.
That is actually a backwards question.
A hundred ten or so years ago, the Navajo rez consisted of a very small area around Shiprock, New Mexico.
The rest of what is now the Navajo Rez had previously been given to the Hopi tribe.
As the Navajo tribe grew more populous, land was taken from the Hopis and given to the Navajos.
The Hopi tribe is now confined to a very small area inside the Navajo Rez.
Google (Navajo Hopi land dispute), and you will find all you need to know, and probably something that you don’t want to know.
The pueblo tribes are, for the most part, occupying the same lands they have had for centuries. Acoma, NM is the oldest continuously occupied city in North America, by many hundreds of years. The Zunis are also living in their ancient area. Some of them are partially descended from the Spanish conquistadores.

Canyon Trilogy: Native American Flute Music $9.49 Nakai’s free improvisations on this album are based on his impressions of the Anasazi and Sinagua sites, ancient cliff dwellings that were home to communities of Native people thousands of years ago. By using the Roland SDE 3000 Digital Delay system, Nakai is able to play duets with his own echo, in an effort to emulate the echoes of the past that haunt these ruins. On this recording, Nakai’s flut… |
